Canto I

Today, we are going to talk about the podcast you watched, and we will discuss Canto I.

Some important things in Canto I - "Dark Woods"; the three beasts: the leopard, lion, and she-wolf; and Virgil.  Also, you have allusions to Troy, Rome, and the journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven.

So, why Virgil?  Why is Virgil not allowed into Heaven?

Here are two sites that will help us with this discussion:

An essay on the three beasts go HERE

And an overview of Canto I - go HERE

Homework: Cantos 2-4.  We will start these in class if we have time.

The Inferno

Today, we will review the multiple choice questions from yesterday.

Then, we will move on to an introduction to Dante's Inferno.  You will all need to take the following test: Take the following test and see what region of Hell you belong in.

Tonight, you will need to read Canto 1 and watch the video below!

Here are two websites full of information on Dante's Infero: University of Texas here and The World of Dante here
As we read you need to outline each section of HELL:

Each section should contain:

1) What type of sinners are in the circle (note that some circles have sub-divisions)
2) The punishment(s)
3) Who is there (both real people and those from literature)
4) Discuss how the punishment fits the sin
5) List the monster/demon in the various circles
7) List any allusions (outside literary characters)
8) List a theme

These outlines will be due next Wednesday.  I expect them to be detailed.
