Poetry Review

Today, I will be giving each of you a poetry packet.  You'll need to do the following with each poem in the packet:

For each poem –

1) list the literary movement

2) list the major theme

3) list examples of literary devices found within the poem that reinforce the literary movement

4) Give a brief summary of the dramatic happening in the poem

5) For one poem write an Explication (a short essay that discuss how the poem creates meaning.  Look at theme and relate form, imagery, tone, speaker, lit elements to meaning).

PLEASE REMEMBER TO READ THE POEM MULTIPLE TIMES!

Lit Movements

Each of you needs to choose a different literary movement, research it - the characteristics, major themes, styles, employment of literary devices, authors, and bring one example of a poem from the period to share with the class and to discuss. You'll need to post all of these things on your blog so that your classmates can use it to study.

Please start compiling note cards of literary devices.

As we review for the AP Test you should spend an hour or so each night looking or reviewing poems from various periods of literature. We will look at each period briefly and examine some of the poems again for ideas.

The first period that you should reacquaint yourself with is the metaphysical poets. Remember John Donne is the greatest poet of this movement.

For the Augustans you should concentrate mainly on Alexander Pope. Read "Essay on Criticism" and "Rape of Lock". Pay attention to the heroic couplets.

Monday

Okay - so today we are going to work on your hell essays.  First make sure you have your outlines of Dante's Inferno done and posted. 

NOTE - we might be stating a new book, a play this week, so utilize your in-class time wisely. 

Thursday

Today - Cantos 29-31

The INFERNO

Cantos 26 -29.

Inferno

Today we need to look at Cantos 23 - 25.

Remember to begin outlining the circles of Hell.

Each section should contain:

1) What type of sinners are in the circle (note that some circles have sub-divisions)
2) The punishment(s)
3) Who is there (both real people and those from literature)
4) Discuss how the punishment fits the sin
5) List the monster/demon in the various circles 
7) List any allusions (outside literary characters)
8) List a theme

These outlines will be due next Wednesday.  I expect them to be detailed.
